SUMMARY:Two Local Artists
DESCRIPTION:From January 30th to April 27th\, 2025\, the Bellamy Mansion Museum will host the “Two Local Artists” exhibition of original artwork by BJ Grimmer & Ricardo Perez.\nView the show\, free\, during regular museum hours: Mondays-Sundays: 10 am-4 pm. There will be an Artists’ Reception Friday\, February 28th from 6-8 pm. To gain access to the exhibition\, please stop by the Carriage House Visitor Center upon arrival for free admission.\nAbout the Artists:\nBJ Grimmer:\nBJ Grimmer is a long-time artist and former art educator. She\nhas been painting and drawing all her life and received her bachelor’s degree in art education from Iowa State University.\nSince moving to Wilmington in 2019\, BJ has been represented at the Citrine Gallery and has had multiple solo shows including at the Burgwin-Wright House & Gardens and at the Bellamy Mansion Museum previously.\nRicardo Perez:\nRicardo spent 42 years as a National Park Service Ranger where his love of storytelling\, nature\, and historic foodways eventually led him to the world of art and North Carolina in his retirement. He serves as the president of the Art League of Leland and has been a featured artist in Cameron Art Museum’s Art of the State as well as exhibiting his landscapes\, portraits\, and still life originals in several solo shows.\nMany of his works feature common food items\, and he tells stories through those images of the edible. I think the French elevated it to the form we know now\, but the croissant originated in Austria\, as a way of celebrating the Austrian army’s victory over the Turks in 1683. Food origins are a wonderful way to explore history.”\nFor more information\, please contact Leslie at lmorton@bellamymansion.org or by calling (910)-251-3700 x305.\nhttps://www.bellamymansion.org/exhibits.html

SUMMARY:"Red Tails" screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the Civil Aeronautics Authority selects 13 black cadets to become part of an experimental program at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The program aims at training colored personnel to become fighter pilots for the Army. However\, discrimination\, lack of institutional support and the racist belief that these men lacked the intelligence and aptitude for the job dog their every step. Despite this\, the Tuskegee Airmen\, as they become known\, more than prove their worth. \nThis screening is sponsored by the NC Black Leadership Caucus.

SUMMARY:Soup To Nuts Live! Featuring Big Al Hall
DESCRIPTION:Soup Live! returns next Thursday\, March 13th @ 7:30 pm in the MC Erny Gallery and features Big Al Hall!\nAlex Hall\, or Big Al\, was raised in the bread basket of traditional old time and string band music. He fell in love with the raw beauty in the ancient music. Alex quickly saw and felt a likeness between the energy of the rock music and the rowdy old time string bands. He began to focus on songwriting then moved to Wilmington\, NC. It was here he began to combine modern sounds with old and record his original material as well as new takes on traditional songs. \nReserve your seats by emailing soup@whqr.org or call 910-343-1640 Ext 203 during regular business hours. SUMMARY:Scala!!! & Female Trouble: A Night of Chaos\, Bad Taste\, Big Hair & Cult Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a double header with “Scala!!!” and John Waters’s cult classic\, “Female Trouble.” \nScala!!!\nDuring Britain’s post-punk Thatcher years\, London’s legendary Scala cinema offered community refuge with a programme ranging from established classics and offbeat cult hits to sexploitation\, horror\, Kung Fu and LGBTQIA+ titles. Nudging the boundaries of convention\, the cavernous picture palace acted as a source of inspiration for movie lovers and creatives. Featuring a cornucopia of interviews\, archive and film clips\, this is an engrossing tribute to an indelible legacy. Directed by Jane Giles and Ali Catterall. \nFemale Trouble\nDawn Davenport progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. Directed by John Waters. \nThe $25 VIP package includes tickets to both screenings\, a cocktail and snack. Tickets are $15 for individual screenings.

SUMMARY:John Waters Devil’s Advocate
DESCRIPTION:The Pope of Trash\, The Duke of Dirt\, and now the Devil’s Advocate. John Waters delivers an all-new\, fast-moving\, part-confessional\, part-inquisitional comic spoken word show. Known for his “transgressive” films and his “subversive” books\, Waters salutes the new gender-guerilla generation of today for doing the impossible – actually making him nervous. \nWith a decades-long career\, John Waters has carved a distinctive niche in American cinema and literature as a filmmaker and author. Known for his provocative and satirical approach\, Waters has written and directed sixteen films\, including cult classics like Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. His work unapologetically tackles themes of race\, sex\, gender\, consumerism\, and religion\, infused with his unique blend of wit and cynicism. An acclaimed author of ten books\, including Shock Value and Liarmouth: A Feel Bad Romance. Waters has also ventured into photography\, sculpture\, and performance art\, continually re-editing and queering popular culture with his signature directorial flair. \nWarning: This is not your mother’s one-man show.

SUMMARY:"The Playmaker" screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:The story of Paul Green will capture you. This native son of North Carolina went to Broadway and back with a dream -That someday he could write a new ending for the Old South. Can a play create justice? Can an actor perform change? \nThrough in-depth interviews with Green’s family\, leading Paul Green scholars\, and theater experts\, this documentary explores the life and work of North Carolina playwright and activist Paul Green. At the heart of this documentary are Green’s controversial folk plays written between the 1920s and 1940s\, addressing pressing issues of integration\, capital punishment\, and chain gang reform. Set to an original and haunting Appalachian/ Southern Gothic score\, The Playmaker features never-before-published autobiographical tapes\, 1930’s home movies\, 1970’s interview footage\, and custom animated illustrations to tell a story of North Carolina’s most prolific playwright. \nJoin us for Social Hour at the Jengo’s Backyard Bar at 6:30pm and stay after the screening for a Q&A with the filmmaker and local community members! This screening is brought to you by South Arts\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium Presents\, Cucalorus Film Foundation\, WHQR\, and Working Films.
