She\nhas been painting and drawing all her life and received her bachelor’s degree in art education from Iowa State University.\nSince moving to Wilmington in 2019\, BJ has been represented at the Citrine Gallery and has had multiple solo shows including at the Burgwin-Wright House & Gardens and at the Bellamy Mansion Museum previously.\nRicardo Perez:\nRicardo spent 42 years as a National Park Service Ranger where his love of storytelling\, nature\, and historic foodways eventually led him to the world of art and North Carolina in his retirement. He serves as the president of the Art League of Leland and has been a featured artist in Cameron Art Museum’s Art of the State as well as exhibiting his landscapes\, portraits\, and still life originals in several solo shows.\nMany of his works feature common food items\, and he tells stories through those images of the edible. Today TACT supports the quality of life & economic vitality of the Cape Fear Region with theatrical productions at Thalian Hall\, the 2nd Street Stage Historic USO Building\, and other community venues\, management of the Community Arts Center\, the arts festival Orange Street ArtsFest\, & Youth Theatre education/performance opportunities. During the 2023-2024 season 76\,546 people participated in Thalian Association productions\, attended special events\, or visited the Community Arts Center. 7006 youths & adults participated in youth theatre programs\, 50\,548 people attended an event or class at the Community Arts Center\, and 18\,992 people saw a show or special event. A combination of paint and quilting are patched together to capture these seemingly small moments that reflect the happiness\, pride and depth of motherhood. These moments are depicted in an illustrative style that distills the essence of its subjects. Subtle clues of the subject’s identity are exposed whether it be the strong emphasis on hair to allude to the blackness of the subjects or patterning within their clothing. In many ways each piece serves as self-portraiture as they are moments that have evoked an emotional response from the artist. \nAdams comes from a lineage of quilters and creatives. The practice of quilting allows Adams to work from home within the chaos of raising two daughters. Her girls\, Zoe and Norah\, are able to experience these moments and witness the process of translating life into art through their mother’s lens. Adams has created heirlooms that memorialize these specific points in time for the Adams and provide a tangible means of holding onto these moments. \nThe quilts themselves breakdown art institution norms by bringing together painting and craft. These objects give the viewer the sensation of warmth\, comfort and home. \n“Bloom For Yesterday” in essence is a love letter to Adams younger self. As products of divorce and troubled youths\, both Rachel and Ryan are dedicated to providing a life for their girls that is full of adventure\, creativity and love. In many ways they are able to experience things for the first time alongside their girls and in return their own inner child is able to blossom in ways they didn’t know they were capable of. On a broader scale the work serves as a reminder of Black joy. As a Black family living in Maine it is not often Black families are represented enjoying the Maine landscape. Adams has developed a vibrant\, graphic pattern-based visual language filled with references to the natural world that possess an heirloom quality. Her work takes form by way of quilting\, painting\, design and large-scale murals. \nAdams moved to Maine in 2005 to pursue her BFA from the Maine College of Art and Design. She has gone on to exhibit artwork at Center for Maine Contemporary Art Dowling Walsh Gallery and Portland Museum of Art. She has attended residencies at Speedwell\, Stephen Pace House and is an Indigo Arts Alliance David C Driscoll Fellow. Her artwork has been acquired by the Farnsworth Art Museum and several personal collections. In addition to her studio practice\, Adams has been commissioned to create murals for several institutions including the Children’s Museum of Portland\, University of Maine and the Farnsworth Art Museum. \nThis spring Adams alongside her husband and creative partner will install a mural at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI am interested in distilling personal memories and experiences into abstractions. DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Australia’s most famous reef turns into a snow globe as millions of coral polyps reproduce to send the next generation afloat. This incredible display disguises a harsh truth: the Great Barrier Reef is under attack. More than half of the coral here has died\, with climate change bleaching many parts of this vast landscape. But don’t give up hope! There is still plenty to see and plenty to save. With marine biologist Dr. Erika Woolsey\, meet some of the most bizarre\, colorful species that live in these underwater jungles. \nDr. Erika Woolsey is a marine biologist\, divemaster\, and virtual reality filmmaker. Her research and career have taken her to reefs all over the world. Woolsey carried out her Ph.D. research in Australia\, where she studied the Great Barrier Reef. She is the chief scientist and CEO of The Hydrous\, a non-profit organization on a mission to inspire ocean empathy and marine stewardship. She uses 360-degree photography to create immersive virtual reality videos to help people understand the ocean and reefs from anywhere in the world. A member of the renowned Marsalis family\, he has toured internationally with jazz legends like Ray Charles and Art Blakey while also leading his own groups. Starting his production career at seventeen\, he has produced over 120 recordings\, earning one Grammy and several nominations. Marsalis holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Music Performance and Production from Berklee College of Music\, a Master’s in Jazz Performance from the University of Louisville\, and a Doctorate from the New England College. \nThe Uptown Jazz Orchestra (UJO)\, founded in 2007 by NEA Jazz Master and Grammy-winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis\, promotes the rich cultural legacy of American jazz through entertaining and educational performances. Combining the dance-first sensibility of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with influences from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, and John Coltrane\, UJO keeps important jazz traditions alive\, such as riff-playing and New Orleans polyphony. The orchestra has released three critically acclaimed CDs and tours internationally.

DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the Civil Aeronautics Authority selects 13 black cadets to become part of an experimental program at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The program aims at training colored personnel to become fighter pilots for the Army. However\, discrimination\, lack of institutional support and the racist belief that these men lacked the intelligence and aptitude for the job dog their every step. Despite this\, the Tuskegee Airmen\, as they become known\, more than prove their worth. \nThis screening is sponsored by the NC Black Leadership Caucus.

DESCRIPTION:“A Little Lunch Music” returns Thursday\, March 13 at noon in the MC Erny Gallery\, featuring performances by UNCW Students Thomas Austria and Guitare Le.\nAbout the Artists: \nThomas Austria has performed with distinction at departmental recitals and masterclasses with guest artists\, has contributed his talents to musical productions\, and most recently was the winner of last year’s Richard Deas Concerto Competition. This had given him the privilege of performing in the Wilson Center alongside the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his efforts on piano\, Thomas contributes as a bassoonist with the community-based Wilmington Symphonic Winds and occasionally with the Wilmington Symphony. \nComing from Vietnam\, Guitare Le is an international Honors senior double majoring in Music Performance and Communication Studies. In her time at UNCW\, Guitare has performed in recitals and seminars as both piano soloist and accompanist\, several UNCW Department of Music’s Honors Recitals\, and was awarded twice the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for achieving the top score as a piano soloist in the Honors Audition

DESCRIPTION:In this collaborative Pop-Up Art Show with DREAMS Center for Arts Education\, Art in Bloom Gallery is delighted to share the creations of Wilmington’s rising stars! Join us in Mayfaire Town Center for this weekend exhibit\, celebrating the artwork of DREAMS Center’s youth artists in our new gallery space. \nVisit us at 970 Inspiration Drive on Saturday April 5\, from 2-5pm & Sunday\, April 6\, 2-5pm for Reception Events! Meet DREAMS’ rising artists\, enjoy their original work\, live music by guitarist Miles Moore\, and refreshments. Or visit between 10-6pm on Saturday and 12-5pm on Sunday to see this special Pop-Up exhibit on display. \nGallery events are always free and open to the public. On view along with these exhibits\, Art in Bloom Gallery showcases a plethora of fine art by over 30 local artists. \nThank you to the North Carolina Museum of Art for sponsoring this opportunity through its Artist Innovation Mentorship program (AIM). We can’t wait to see where these talented young artists go from here! \nAbout DREAMS Center for Arts Education: \nEstablished in 1997\, DREAMS of Wilmington is a youth development organization that is dedicated to creating a culture of confidence for youth and teens\, through equitable access to arts education\, supported by the values of respect\, family\, and community. \nToday\, DREAMS provides free-of-charge arts programming to more than 600 young people and their families each year. It offers more than 40 classes per week at 6 different sites in the Wilmington\, NC area\, including its newly renovated\, 12\,000 square foot inner-city center on Wilmington’s North Side. This space features its 4\,000 square foot performance venue and multipurpose space\, “The Garage at DREAMS.” \nYou’ll find DREAMS programming at public housing sites\, city recreation centers\, and in after-school and out-of-school programs across New Hanover County. DREAMS employs more than 20 teaching artists who share its passion of creating a world where every child has the right to self-expression and the opportunity to grow into the person that they are and wish to become. Additionally\, DREAMS has the following initiatives: Public Art\, Visiting Artists\, Teen Council\, Family Engagement\, Dance Theatre of DREAMS (DTD)\, The Garage at DREAMS\, and The Gallery at DREAMS. \nAbout NCMA AIM: \nThe Artist Innovation Mentorship program is the signature outreach program of the NCMA\, pairing teaching artists with middle school–aged youth in after-school programs throughout North Carolina. During its first year\, NCMA AIM provided eight artist residencies that served a total of seven counties. By partnering with community leaders and local artists within those counties\, the program served over 100 students and impacted over 5\,000 community members. The NCMA continues to work in rural communities through partnerships with the North Carolina Arts Council\, Hometown Strong\, and local county partners to increase outreach efforts as it enters the second year of a multiyear commitment to the AIM program. \nPilot funding was provided by the Anonymous Trust and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources\, with additional generous support from First Citizens Bank\, William R. Kenan\, Jr. Charitable Trust\, SECU Foundation\, and Oak Foundation.
