SUMMARY:“Yana Slutskaya & the Durham Art Guild Exchange” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:June 13 – July 27\, 2025 | Artist Reception June 15\, 2-5pm \nThis is Art in Bloom Gallery’s second year partnering with the Durham Art Guild to introduce new artists to our coastal community. This year we are partnering to bring photographer\, Yana Slutskaya\, to Wilmington. Join us in the gallery on Sunday\, June 15th\, from 2-5pm. Enjoy special refreshments\, meet our artists\, and enjoy live music by Justin Lacey! In addition\, we feature continuously rotating art featuring 30+ of Art in Bloom Gallery’s Artists! \nYana Slutskaya is an award-winning professional artist and contemporary still-life photographer based near Raleigh\, NC. She holds a BA degree in Fine Arts\, majoring in Painting and Theatrical Design\, from Moscow State Academic Art College. \nAs a still-life photographer\, Yana finds immense joy and fulfillment in capturing the silent stories of inanimate objects.\nThe process feels akin to creating scenes on a theatrical stage\, drawing from her background as a professional theatrical stage designer and decorator. She approaches each composition by envisioning the objects as dynamic characters\, each playing a role in a captivating narrative. Through the interplay of light\, particularly natural light from windows\, Yana strives to infuse my compositions with an inviting\, dramatic\, and artistic ambiance. \nHer inspiration stems from everyday elements that surround her\, such as fruits and flowers from the garden\, seashells\, pottery\, and unique vintage items discovered in various places. The beauty of nature and her passion for gardening continually fuels Yana’s creativity\, offering a wellspring of ideas for her work. \nGallery events are always free and open to the public. On view along with these exhibits\, Art in Bloom Gallery showcases a plethora of fine art by over 30 local artists. The gallery is open Monday–Thursday 10am-5pm\, Friday – Saturday 10am–6pm and Sunday 12-5pm and is in Mayfaire Town Center at 970 Inspiration Drive in Wilmington\, NC. \nAbout the Durham Art Guild\n The Durham Art Guild is a nonprofit member-driven visual arts organization established in 1948. SUMMARY:“Wrapping It Up” Jo Ann Alford & Elizabeth Darrow Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Art in Bloom Gallery is celebrating the artistic careers of gallery artist Elizabeth Darrow & guest artist Jo Ann Alford through their collaborative exhibit\, “Wrapping It Up.” After pursuing a variety of artistic approaches\, these lifelong artists & friends are coming together to embrace the strengths of shape\, pattern and collage. Whether by layering wrapping paper over oil backgrounds\, or building abstract scenes from a single paper element\, both artists allow their pieces to emerge intuitively from their creative processes. So even if Jo Ann Alford & Elizabeth Darrow are moving closer to “wrapping up” their artistic journeys … their ever innovating work will continue to develop and inspire! \nJoin us in the gallery on Sunday\, August 3rd\, 2-5pm for the Artist Reception. Enjoy special refreshments\, meet our artists\, and enjoy live music by Robert Beauchene! \nGallery events are always free and open to the public. On view along with these exhibits\, Art in Bloom Gallery showcases a plethora of fine art by over 30 local artists. Art in Bloom is open Monday–Thursday 10am-5pm\, Friday – Saturday 10am–6pm and Sunday 12-5pm at 970 Inspiration Drive\, Mayfaire Town Center\, Wilmington\, NC. \nAbout the Artists\nFrom weaving to watercolor\, multimedia artist\, adventurer & educator Jo Ann Alford continues to pursue her independent path. After studying fiber arts and calligraphy in the West Coast\, Jo Ann returned to North Carolina to expand both her own creativity and the world views of her students. Though she finds herself more “settled” now in retirement\, Jo Ann still has a wanderlust for life\, within and outside of herself. She is currently focusing on nonobjective collage to offer a more open\, personal invitation of her work. \nAbout the series\, Jo Ann says\, “The first element that is adhered to the paper is a catalyst and may disappear as I respond to the lines\, shapes\, colors\, textures\, and negative space. As I travel across the surface\, I enjoy the surprises that occur during the process. I’m always eager to see where my artistic journey will lead me.” \nMultimedia painter Elizabeth Darrow has made Wilmington her home since 1977. Elizabeth has worked in oil and collage throughout her career\, exploring a variety of abstract & figurative styles depending on her medium\, but never works “from life” in the traditional sense. Most of the imagery that comes to her seems to hatch of its own accord\, emerging from the process. Says Elizabeth about her newest works\, “I enjoy playing with color and shapes and patterns\, and watching their interplay … watching them take on a life of their own. It’s a magical process.” \nIn this exhibit\, Elizabeth has incorporated patterns found in wrapping paper\, and juxtaposed them with each other against a background of oil paint and gestural drawing to create something altogether new. “That may be why the show is called ‘Wrapping It Up’… Or maybe it’s because we’re wrapping up our artistic careers (a process that could take years)… Either way\, it’s always fun to play and see what happens.”

SUMMARY:"Fanged Dreams" Featuring the works of Carolyn Colby and HP Fangs
DESCRIPTION:On August 16th\, Elsewhere invites you into “Fanged Dreams”\, a one-night mashup of wild imagination\, luminous beauty\, and unapologetic goofiness. Wilmington artist Carolyn Colby conjures dreamscapes that shimmer like stained glass—only if stained glass could sprout cats in flower crowns wearing space helmets\, mermaids made of petals\, and flocks of cosmic owls sailing through surreal universes. Her work pulls you in with jewel-toned layers and “how-did-she-even-make-that?” detail\, the kind that makes you lean in until your nose almost touches the glass. \nHP Fangs brings the bite — but in the dopest way possible. Known for putting big teeth on just about anything (seriously\, nothing is safe)\, Fangs’ illustrations are fueled by 80s/90s pop culture\, comic book swagger\, and a sharp sense of humor. His characters grin\, snarl\, and smirk at you in marker-bright colors\, all while reminding you that art can be both cool and ridiculous. \nTogether\, Colby and Fangs serve up a visual conversation that’s part daydream\, part Saturday morning cartoon — a “what if?” collision of beauty and bite\, sparkle and snicker. It’s gonna be dope.

Meet the Art of Dr. Seuss experts Mike Golonka and Jes Stiner\, while you enjoy food\, drink\, and conversation.\n——— \nThe Art of Dr. Seuss Collection \nFor over 60 years\, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. However\, his artistic talent went far beyond the printed page. Revealing a dazzling rainbow of hues not seen in the primary-color palette of his books for children\, Ted’s “Secret Art” paintings exhibit a sophisticated\, technically accomplished\, and often quite unrestrained side of his talent. \nSeuss always dreamed of sharing his “Secret Art” with his fans and had entrusted his wife\, Audrey\, to carry out his wishes once he was gone. In 1997\, this dream was realized when The Art of Dr. Seuss project was launched. For the first time\, collectors were able to see and acquire lithographs\, serigraphs\, and sculptures reproduced from Ted’s original drawings and paintings. In her introduction to the collection Audrey Geisel wrote: “I remember telling Ted that there would come a day when many of his paintings would be seen\, and he would thus share with his fans another facet of himself—his private self. That day has come. I am glad.”

SUMMARY:Tomáš Kubínek— Certified Lunatic & Master of the Impossible
DESCRIPTION:Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No\, it’s Tomáš Kubínek in Certified Lunatic & Master of the Impossible! A collision of theatre and music-hall\, this exuberant one-man show is equal parts comic brilliance\, virtuosic vaudeville\, and irresistible charm. With The Seattle Times calling the show\, “Equal parts old-time clowning and Monty Pythonesque silliness…the hottest ticket at the festival!” \nThe show is intended for Adult Audiences. \nTomáš Kubínek – (toh-mawsh koo-bee-neck)\, was born in Prague and at the age of three was smuggled out of the country by his parents to escape the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. \nAfter two months in a refugee camp in Austria\, the Kubínek family was granted asylum in Canada and it was there\, in St. Catharines\, Ontario\, that Tomáš\, age 5\, witnessed his first circus. \nHe became passionately interested in clowns\, circus\, theater and magic and his perplexed yet well-adjusted parents took him to see every show that passed through town. \nAt age 9 he presented his first performance before a circle of elderly magicians. By age 13 he had an agent. He performed in coffee-houses between folk-music acts and while still in his teens\, he made his circus debut with a Brazilian clown duo as the rear half of a two-person horse. There was no turning back… \nWorking any and all jobs related to showbiz\, the enterprising Mr. Kubínek was able to save money and travel to Europe to study with some of the world’s greatest teachers of theatre including; Monika Pagneaux\, Pierre Byland\, Jaques Lecoq and Boleslav Polívka. \nThese studies\, combined with his own tireless experiments in the art of live performance\, led to the creation of his award-winning solo stage shows which play to capacity crowds at theaters\, international arts festivals\, and in television broadcasts throughout the world.
