At the\nexhibition’s center\, a large diorama recreates the grand American wilderness as a\ntheatrical tableau. This immersive environment invites close inspection\, revealing\ninstability and distortion beneath familiar narratives. Using humor and wit\, Peoples\ndemonstrates how the very ideas meant to define a place can simultaneously obscure\nother truths\, creating parallel realities or mirror worlds that coexist rather than resolving\ninto singular meaning.\nThe world\, and specifically American ideals\, are Sarah Peoples’ oyster\, and she cracks\nthem open through a multivalent speculum. Derived from the Latin specere\, “to look\,” a\nspeculum refers to three distinct items: a mirror\, the iridescent beauty mark on a bird’s\nwing\, and a medical tool for inspection. In these capacities\, a speculum reflects\, signals\,\nand reveals. The installation of artworks encapsulates all meanings of the word. By\nforegrounding these disparate functions\, the exhibition spotlights the unstable ground\non which perception rests. To look through the oyster speculum is to see through the\nlenses of culture\, history\, and desire.

SUMMARY:I WAS HERE: The Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island
DESCRIPTION:An interactive installation inspired by letters\, notes\, artifacts collected from the Wrightsville Beach Mailbox at Shell Island. Located at the north end of Wrightsville Beach island\, The Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island is a hidden gem where visitors can leave personal messages. Originally placed in 2003\, the mailbox has become a place for heartfelt notes and reflections. Over time\, the journals are collected and moved to the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History\, where they are displayed and archived. The mailbox creates a unique way for people to participate in a conversation through time and space. The letters and notes provide insight into the full scope of humanity. Many are letters to lost loved ones or the universe\, some are very sad\, some are deeply funny. Many are a mixture of emotions. Confessions\, goals\, dreams\, affirmations\, statements of gratitude. For over 100 years\, generations have come to Wrightsville Beach to make lasting memories. Wrightsville Beach Museum is so lucky to be the forever home of so many of our community’s photos and stories\, ensuring those memories are preserved and shared. Every day the museum plays host to a mixture of residents\, visitors\, and people who don’t neatly fit into either category. The mailbox is in many ways a monument to those memories and people.\nUNCW MA Public History Practica: Shell Island Legacy\, Connecting Past to Present Shell Island Beach is an important piece of the history of black leisure sites in Coastal Carolina and the realities of segregation in a tourism driven economy. Between 1917 – 1926\, efforts were made to develop what envisioned as a “mirror of Wrightsville Beach” or “National Negro Playground” on what was then a separate island. The resort was only open for three summers between 1923 and 1926\, but is a key historical touchpoint for the history of Black tourism in the area. In many ways\, the mailbox has become a form of ‘sacred space’ for complex emotion that has never fully been connected to the site’s history. A primary feature of this exhibition will be a project highlighting the emotional experience of archiving and connecting past to present. Artists and Community Curators Deidre Carney is an interdisciplinary contemporary artist and curator of the Wrightsville Beach Museum. Deidre’s work is mostly influenced by dynamic engagement\, utilizing archival and digital arts methods to explore the relationship between the ephemeral and the preserved\, the curated and the collaborative.\nRebekah Burroughs is a student in the UNCW Public History Program\, curating for the Wrightsville Beach Museum as part of her program requirements. Rebekah has worked in curation and museum collections at The Country Doctor Museum in Bailey\, NC\, and the Wilmington Railroad Museum and Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens.\nWrightsville Beach Museum Junior Docents: A Tar Heel Association Club is a free club for students in grades 4-12 where students learn by doing. Students in the program gain curatorial and creative arts skills through participation in every stage of the process.

The program offers a deeper look at Warhol’s expansive practice and his influence across media\, from visual art to film.

Grounded in the tradition while drawing naturally from blues and other American roots styles\, their music reflects the full spirit of New Orleans jazz. Shaped by years of busking in public squares\, their sound carries a playful\, infectious energy that draws people in. Whether you are a lifelong jazz fan or discovering it for the first time\, their performances feel spontaneous\, welcoming\, and full of life. \nFor over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity\, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans\, young and old\, neophytes and niche-enthusiasts\, with the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog. The band is composed of Shaye Cohn (cornet)\, Barnabus Jones (trombone)\, Todd Burdick (tuba)\, Craig Flory (clarinet)\, Gregory Sherman (guitar and vocals)\, Max Bien-Kahn (banjo)\, Robin Rapuzzi (washboard)\, and Erika Lewis (vocals and bass drum). \nWhile they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz\, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music\, spirituals\, country blues\, string band music\, ragtime\, and New Orleans R&B. Professor Berliner is the author of “Hollywood Renegade: Elaine May\, ‘Mikey and Nicky\,’ and the Making of a Masterpiece” (University of Texas Press\, 2026). SUMMARY:Cape Fear Arts in Motion: Winds\, Rhythm\, and Soul
DESCRIPTION:Forward Motion Dance Company presents a stunning and innovative dance event with their annual performance\, Cape Fear Arts in Motion: Winds\, Rhythm\, and Soul. This performance unites dancers with musical and visual artists to bring the art form of modern\, contemporary\, hip hop\, classical and jazz dance to the beautiful and historic Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts for a varied and collaborative event that showcases the talents of Choreographer Tracey Varga. \nPresented are new performances along with re-creations of dances from the past\, including several pieces with original film works by filmmaker Patrick Ogelvie\, including one with an exciting new teen piece featuring teenage dancers from local studios. In a new classical piece\, a trio of flutists\, Sallie Dunn\, Sarah Hand\, and Mary Gheen\, will perform live onstage with the dancers. All three flutists are active in performance and education in the Wilmington community\, as well as members of the Wilmington Flute Choir.  \nForward Motion Dance Company is excited to invite Phillip Clyde Bernier as guest choreographer. Phillip is a Wilmington-based performer\, choreographer\, songwriter\, recording artist\, and arts educator with a multi-genre career\, who now is owner and lead instructor of Wilmington Hip Hop Dance\, where he mentors and trains young performers in confidence\, creativity\, and stage presence. \nThis exciting show is not to be missed\, so come be astounded by an inspired evening of music\, film\, and modern\, contemporary\, classical and jazz dance that Cape Fear Arts in Motion: Winds\, Rhythm\, and Soul brings to the main stage of the beautiful and historic Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts. Forward Motion Dance Company is proud to be a resident dance company at THCPA and of our legacy of bringing quality dance performances to this historic venue.

SUMMARY:“From There to Here” Exhibit: Featuring Bruce Bowman & Sally Sutton
DESCRIPTION:This September we will be joined by painters\, Bruce Bowman and Sally Sutton\, previously represented by New Elements Gallery.  “From There to Here” will feature the vivid and colorful paintings of two artists. \nBruce’s painting style uses broad palette knives which allow his work to be quick and expressive and allows for the ability to create sharp edges and tight lines. His wet-on-wet application of paint creates an impasto technique providing dimension and texture. Bruce’s approach to painting is refreshingly opposite of his work as an architect\, which requires accuracy and realism. \nSally enjoys the challenge of capturing light while experimenting with rich color combinations while contrasting them with deep shadows using brushstrokes that create movement and energy. Combining her love of nature with en plein aire painting\, she strives to share her personal reflections of the locations with her viewers. \nJoin us in the gallery on Sunday\, September 20th\, 2-5pm for our Artist Reception. Enjoy special refreshments\, meet our artists\, and enjoy live music by violinist Shirley Lebo! This exhibit will run through November 1st\, alongside a new selection of featured works by our 30+ Gallery Artists.
