Rankin for a gallery talk exploring the cultural and artistic history of inflatable sculpture and air-based forms. \nDrawing connections among works by Andy Warhol\, Mike Kelley\, Nick Cave\, and artists featured in Fresh Air: Inflatable Sculptures\, Rankin will examine how air functions as both a material and a symbol across art\, technology\, and the collective imagination. \nDiscover how softness\, mass-produced objects\, and cultural ephemera challenge traditional ideas of sculpture. The conversation will also consider inflatables as objects of tenderness and vulnerability\, positioned between ecological awareness and social experimentation. \nAbout the Artist\nAV Rankin headshot\nAna Vizcarra Rankin (A.V.) is a Uruguayan-American artist whose work explores the intersections of art\, science\, environmental stewardship\, and human perception. Through painting\, drawing\, installation\, and participatory projects\, she investigates how mapping\, data visualization\, astronomy\, and material culture shape our understanding of the world and our place within it. Rankin’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, and is held in numerous public collections including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum\, Brandywine River Museum of Art\, and the Uruguay Cultural Foundation for the Arts. \nA.V. (pronounced Ay-vee) works from Painted Foot Art Lab in downtown Wilmington\, NC. She is the founder of BDG International\, a curatorial exchange program dedicated to grassroots collaboration and cultural exchange\, and serves as part-time Faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her current research examines light\, water\, atmosphere\, and systems of connection\, exploring the invisible boundaries that shape our ecological and social worlds.

Arts integration supports all educators! \nLunch and all materials will be provided. Shannon has created large-scale\, site-specific installations for Marbles Kids Museum\, the city of Raleigh\, and the Portland Children’s Museum in Portland\, Oregon. \nMedina Demeter: Medina Demeter graduated from Hiram College in 2005 and went to NC to begin her career at Orrum Middle. Three years later\, Medina became the Educational Director at Cape Fear Regional Theatre. Soon after\, she began teaching theatre arts full-time at Hoke County High School in 2008\, where she continues to teach to this day. She was named Teacher of the Year for Hoke High in 2012 & 2020\, and in 2020\, she was also voted as the NC Theatre Arts Educators Teacher of the Year. Medina served as the secretary for NCTAE and currently serves as their professional enrichment liaison. In 2018\, she was elected as the NC Thespians Chapter Director\, and she continues to run the organization by coordinating the regional and state festivals as well as the NC All-State Theatre program. By overlaying textures and hues over her monotone photos of places and models\, Catharine imagines fantasy narratives within shadowy\, inscrutable worlds. \nIt was the discovery of Venetian plaster in the mid-eighties that inspired Atlanta-based painter James P. Garrett to explore painting as a creative artform. Moving from faux and decorative painting to embrace the historical traditions of Venetian plaster\, James layers tints of marble and lime\, polishing his painting to a silky feel for effects only his plaster can achieve. Together\, Catharine & James reimagine influences both natural and nebulous through countless layers of history\, color\, and light.

She was a pioneer in the new directions of metal sculpture and best known for large-scale\, highly colorful painted arrangements of cut aluminum with enamel strips radiating\, undulating\, or curling in giant arrangements of ribbon\, enchanted towers\, and even the burst of fireworks piece. Dorothy Gillespie is well known as a painter\, sculptor and installation artist whose work incorporated many significant 20th-century trends in art.

DESCRIPTION:An interactive installation inspired by letters\, notes\, artifacts collected from the Wrightsville Beach Mailbox at Shell Island. Located at the north end of Wrightsville Beach island\, The Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island is a hidden gem where visitors can leave personal messages. Originally placed in 2003\, the mailbox has become a place for heartfelt notes and reflections. Over time\, the journals are collected and moved to the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History\, where they are displayed and archived. The mailbox creates a unique way for people to participate in a conversation through time and space. The letters and notes provide insight into the full scope of humanity. Many are letters to lost loved ones or the universe\, some are very sad\, some are deeply funny. Many are a mixture of emotions. Confessions\, goals\, dreams\, affirmations\, statements of gratitude. For over 100 years\, generations have come to Wrightsville Beach to make lasting memories. Wrightsville Beach Museum is so lucky to be the forever home of so many of our community’s photos and stories\, ensuring those memories are preserved and shared. Every day the museum plays host to a mixture of residents\, visitors\, and people who don’t neatly fit into either category. The mailbox is in many ways a monument to those memories and people.\nUNCW MA Public History Practica: Shell Island Legacy\, Connecting Past to Present Shell Island Beach is an important piece of the history of black leisure sites in Coastal Carolina and the realities of segregation in a tourism driven economy. Between 1917 – 1926\, efforts were made to develop what envisioned as a “mirror of Wrightsville Beach” or “National Negro Playground” on what was then a separate island. The resort was only open for three summers between 1923 and 1926\, but is a key historical touchpoint for the history of Black tourism in the area. In many ways\, the mailbox has become a form of ‘sacred space’ for complex emotion that has never fully been connected to the site’s history. A primary feature of this exhibition will be a project highlighting the emotional experience of archiving and connecting past to present. Artists and Community Curators Deidre Carney is an interdisciplinary contemporary artist and curator of the Wrightsville Beach Museum. Deidre’s work is mostly influenced by dynamic engagement\, utilizing archival and digital arts methods to explore the relationship between the ephemeral and the preserved\, the curated and the collaborative.\nRebekah Burroughs is a student in the UNCW Public History Program\, curating for the Wrightsville Beach Museum as part of her program requirements. Rebekah has worked in curation and museum collections at The Country Doctor Museum in Bailey\, NC\, and the Wilmington Railroad Museum and Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens.\nWrightsville Beach Museum Junior Docents: A Tar Heel Association Club is a free club for students in grades 4-12 where students learn by doing. Students in the program gain curatorial and creative arts skills through participation in every stage of the process.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for another special night of live music with the Port City Ukuholics in support of the Cucalorus Film Foundation! Tickets are $20\, with all proceeds benefiting the Cucalorus Film Foundation that uplift emerging and innovative artists through festivals\, residencies\, community cinema\, professional development and youth education. \nThe Port City Ukuholic Band was founded by Music Director Lynn O’Connell when she followed a calling to spread the joy of ukulele music in the Wilmington area. Combining multiple ukuleles with a rhythm section (bass and percussion)\, authentic HULA and incredible vocal harmonies the group does an outstanding job at making people smile\, dance\, laugh and enjoy life.

The screenings will include an introduction and discussion led by Mariana Johnson\, a documentary history professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Stay after the matinee (4pm) or show up early for the evening screening (7:30pm) to enjoy the Cinematique Social Hour from 6pm-7:15pm in the Jengo’s Bar (we’ll provide the snacks!) \nThis unique documentary dramatically re-enacts the crime scene and investigation of a police officer’s murder in Dallas.

DESCRIPTION:Within the decadent walls of the Frankenstein mansion\, the Baron and his depraved assistant Otto have discovered the means of creating new life. As the Baron’s laboratory begins to fill up with stitched body parts\, the Baroness dallies with the randy new manservant and soon the decadent\, permissive household is consumed by an outrageous\, bizarre and hilarious combination of death and dismemberment. \nFlesh for Frankenstein was produced by Andy Warhol. This cult classic will be paired with a talk by CAM Associate Curator Ben Billingsley\, exploring the film’s relationship to Andy Warhol: Silver Clouds\, on view June 18 to September 27 at CAM. The program offers a deeper look at Warhol’s expansive practice and his influence across media\, from visual art to film.
