SUMMARY:"Minnie Evans: Draw or Die"- screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:The one-hour documentary film Minnie Evans: Draw or Die explores the inspirational life and artistic mastery of one of the most important African-American artists of the 20th century. Minnie Evans was born in 1892 and raised by her grandmother in Wilmington\, NC\, during a time of racial turmoil in the city. In the early 1940s\, Minnie began her visionary art in earnest\, propelled by her faith and dreams. \nThe documentary — its title comes from a mysterious voice Evans heard asking\, “Why don’t you draw or die?” — coincides with a national resurgence of interest in Evans’ work\, with multiple touring museum exhibitions. \nJoin us for a social hour at the Jengo’s Backyard Bar before the film showing at 6:30pm! There will be a community discussion with the filmmaker and community partners after the screening. This screening is brought to you by South Arts\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium\, Cucalorus Film Foundation\, and WHQR.

SUMMARY:"Cookie Queens" screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of girlhood and the complexities that come with it\, Cookie Queens is a coming-of-age story about the joys\, pressures\, and tensions woven into one of America’s most cherished rituals: Girl Scout Cookie season. \nCaptivating\, candid\, and full of heart\, the film follows four girls ages 5-12 as they navigate the annual whirlwind of selling\, striving\, and succeeding. For these Girl Scouts\, selling cookies isn’t just about Thin Mints and sisterhood – it’s a crash course in commercialism. Behind the smiles lie real pressure: long hours\, ambitious goals\, and weighty expectations. \nWith humor\, warmth\, and a keen eye for small moments revealing big truths\, Cookie Queens shows how growing up is shaped by tensions between community and capitalism. Two screenings: 2pm & 5pm

SUMMARY:"Sherman's March" screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:Armed with a 16mm camera and a grant to make a documentary about the lingering aftermath of William Tecumseh Sherman’s 1864 march to the sea\, Ross McElwee gets sidetracked. After his girlfriend breaks up with him\, Ross shifts his attention from the historical to the personal\, to the battlefield of modern love\, and embarks on a sociological chronicle that documents the courting rites and rituals of the New South. \nA generous and humanistic portrait of several remarkable women that Ross meets along the way\, Sherman’s March sketches it’s characters with novelistic sensitivity: Pat\, an aspiring actress with a yen for Burt Reynolds; Claudia\, a roller-skating interior designer; Jackie\, the activist whose anti-nuclear advocacy dovetails with Ross’s deepest fears; and above all\, Charleen Swansea\, Ross’s mentor and a one-woman Greek chorus of unsolicited romantic counsel.
