SUMMARY:John Waters Devil’s Advocate
DESCRIPTION:The Pope of Trash\, The Duke of Dirt\, and now the Devil’s Advocate. John Waters delivers an all-new\, fast-moving\, part-confessional\, part-inquisitional comic spoken word show. Known for his “transgressive” films and his “subversive” books\, Waters salutes the new gender-guerilla generation of today for doing the impossible – actually making him nervous. \nWith a decades-long career\, John Waters has carved a distinctive niche in American cinema and literature as a filmmaker and author. Known for his provocative and satirical approach\, Waters has written and directed sixteen films\, including cult classics like Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. His work unapologetically tackles themes of race\, sex\, gender\, consumerism\, and religion\, infused with his unique blend of wit and cynicism. An acclaimed author of ten books\, including Shock Value and Liarmouth: A Feel Bad Romance. Waters has also ventured into photography\, sculpture\, and performance art\, continually re-editing and queering popular culture with his signature directorial flair. \nWarning: This is not your mother’s one-man show.

SUMMARY:Scala!!! & Female Trouble: A Night of Chaos\, Bad Taste\, Big Hair & Cult Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a double header with “Scala!!!” and John Waters’s cult classic\, “Female Trouble.” \nScala!!!\nDuring Britain’s post-punk Thatcher years\, London’s legendary Scala cinema offered community refuge with a programme ranging from established classics and offbeat cult hits to sexploitation\, horror\, Kung Fu and LGBTQIA+ titles. Nudging the boundaries of convention\, the cavernous picture palace acted as a source of inspiration for movie lovers and creatives. Featuring a cornucopia of interviews\, archive and film clips\, this is an engrossing tribute to an indelible legacy. Directed by Jane Giles and Ali Catterall. \nFemale Trouble\nDawn Davenport progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. Directed by John Waters. \nThe $25 VIP package includes tickets to both screenings\, a cocktail and snack. Tickets are $15 for individual screenings.

SUMMARY:Soup To Nuts Live! Featuring Big Al Hall
DESCRIPTION:Soup Live! returns next Thursday\, March 13th @ 7:30 pm in the MC Erny Gallery and features Big Al Hall!\nAlex Hall\, or Big Al\, was raised in the bread basket of traditional old time and string band music. He fell in love with the raw beauty in the ancient music. Alex quickly saw and felt a likeness between the energy of the rock music and the rowdy old time string bands. He began to focus on songwriting then moved to Wilmington\, NC. It was here he began to combine modern sounds with old and record his original material as well as new takes on traditional songs. \nReserve your seats by emailing soup@whqr.org or call 910-343-1640 Ext 203 during regular business hours. SUMMARY:"Red Tails" screening at Jengo's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the Civil Aeronautics Authority selects 13 black cadets to become part of an experimental program at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The program aims at training colored personnel to become fighter pilots for the Army. However\, discrimination\, lack of institutional support and the racist belief that these men lacked the intelligence and aptitude for the job dog their every step. Despite this\, the Tuskegee Airmen\, as they become known\, more than prove their worth. \nThis screening is sponsored by the NC Black Leadership Caucus.

SUMMARY:National Geographic Live presents Diving the Great Barrier Reef
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Australia’s most famous reef turns into a snow globe as millions of coral polyps reproduce to send the next generation afloat. This incredible display disguises a harsh truth: the Great Barrier Reef is under attack. More than half of the coral here has died\, with climate change bleaching many parts of this vast landscape. But don’t give up hope! There is still plenty to see and plenty to save. With marine biologist Dr. Erika Woolsey\, meet some of the most bizarre\, colorful species that live in these underwater jungles. \nDr. Erika Woolsey is a marine biologist\, divemaster\, and virtual reality filmmaker. Her research and career have taken her to reefs all over the world. Woolsey carried out her Ph.D. research in Australia\, where she studied the Great Barrier Reef. She is the chief scientist and CEO of The Hydrous\, a non-profit organization on a mission to inspire ocean empathy and marine stewardship. She uses 360-degree photography to create immersive virtual reality videos to help people understand the ocean and reefs from anywhere in the world. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab. \nDive down to the Great Barrier Reef with marine biologist Dr. Erika Woolsey.

Please see the Zoom link listed below\, and all the call options listed in the press release linked here: https://linktr.ee/cabartgallery \nArtist Talk – Rachel Gloria Adams: 2/20 at 5 p.m. EST\nhttps://uncw.zoom.us/j/86725670417?pwd=imfV2RJVMqUECd9IltmmpKjsejgtEe.1\nMeeting ID: 867 2567 0417\nPasscode: RGA \nGallery hours are Monday\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Friday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. \nThe CAB Art Gallery is located in the UNCW Cultural Arts Building\, 5270 Randall Drive\, Wilmington\, NC 28403 – UNCW’s campus on the ground floor of the Cultural Arts Building\, near the building’s main entrance. Visitors can access the gallery from South College Road or Racine Drive\, and parking is available in front of the box office entrance to the building. \nFor more information visit https://linktr.ee/cabartgallery \nRachel Gloria Adams: Bloom for Yesterday \n“Bloom for Yesterday” is a collection of 10 quilts that highlight moments of tenderness within the Adams family. A combination of paint and quilting are patched together to capture these seemingly small moments that reflect the happiness\, pride and depth of motherhood. These moments are depicted in an illustrative style that distills the essence of its subjects. Subtle clues of the subject’s identity are exposed whether it be the strong emphasis on hair to allude to the blackness of the subjects or patterning within their clothing. In many ways each piece serves as self-portraiture as they are moments that have evoked an emotional response from the artist. \nAdams comes from a lineage of quilters and creatives. The practice of quilting allows Adams to work from home within the chaos of raising two daughters. Her girls\, Zoe and Norah\, are able to experience these moments and witness the process of translating life into art through their mother’s lens. Adams has created heirlooms that memorialize these specific points in time for the Adams and provide a tangible means of holding onto these moments. \nThe quilts themselves breakdown art institution norms by bringing together painting and craft. These objects give the viewer the sensation of warmth\, comfort and home. \n“Bloom For Yesterday” in essence is a love letter to Adams younger self. As products of divorce and troubled youths\, both Rachel and Ryan are dedicated to providing a life for their girls that is full of adventure\, creativity and love. In many ways they are able to experience things for the first time alongside their girls and in return their own inner child is able to blossom in ways they didn’t know they were capable of. On a broader scale the work serves as a reminder of Black joy. As a Black family living in Maine it is not often Black families are represented enjoying the Maine landscape. These moments provide a narrative of joy despite the hardships people of color endure. \nFunding for this exhibition at UNCW’s CAB Art Gallery is supported by UNCW’S Seahawks Advancing Interdisciplinary Learning (SAIL) and UNCW’s Department of Art and Art History’s Visiting Artist and Scholars Program. \nwww.rachelgloria.com \nBIOGRAPHY \nRachel Gloria Adams is a multidisciplinary artist living in Portland\, ME. Adams has developed a vibrant\, graphic pattern-based visual language filled with references to the natural world that possess an heirloom quality. Her work takes form by way of quilting\, painting\, design and large-scale murals. \nAdams moved to Maine in 2005 to pursue her BFA from the Maine College of Art and Design. She has gone on to exhibit artwork at Center for Maine Contemporary Art Dowling Walsh Gallery and Portland Museum of Art. She has attended residencies at Speedwell\, Stephen Pace House and is an Indigo Arts Alliance David C Driscoll Fellow. Her artwork has been acquired by the Farnsworth Art Museum and several personal collections. In addition to her studio practice\, Adams has been commissioned to create murals for several institutions including the Children’s Museum of Portland\, University of Maine and the Farnsworth Art Museum. \nThis spring Adams alongside her husband and creative partner will install a mural at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI am interested in distilling personal memories and experiences into abstractions. I am constantly bouncing back and forth between sewing shapes and painting them. I find that I sew what I can’t paint and paint what I can’t sew. These shapes\, icons\, and portraits are patched and pieced together as a way of documenting family connections. \nCV \nPlease find in the press release linked here: https://linktr.ee/cabartgallery \nZOOM\nWhen: Feb 20\, 2025 05:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nTopic: CAB Art Gallery Artist Talk: “Rachel Gloria Adams: Bloom for Yesterday” \nJoin from PC\, Mac\, iPad\, or Android:\nhttps://uncw.zoom.us/j/86725670417?pwd=imfV2RJVMqUECd9IltmmpKjsejgtEe.1\nPasscode: RGA \nPhone one-tap:\n+13052241968\,\,86725670417#\,\,\,\,*121983# US\n+13092053325\,\,86725670417#\,\,\,\,*121983# US \nJoin via audio:\n+1 305 224 1968 US\n+1 309 205 3325 US\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York)\n+1 646 931 3860 US\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 564 217 2000 US\n+1 669 444 9171 US\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 689 278 1000 US\n+1 719 359 4580 US\n+1 253 205 0468 US\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 360 209 5623 US\n+1 386 347 5053 US\n+1 408 638 0968 US (San Jose)\n+1 507 473 4847 US\nWebinar ID: 867 2567 0417\nPasscode: 121983\nInternational numbers available: https://uncw.zoom.us/u/kVEcdPyqr \nJoin from an H.323/SIP room system:\nH.323:\n144.195.19.161 (US West)\n206.247.11.121 (US East)\n115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n159.124.15.191 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n159.124.47.249 (Germany)\n159.124.104.213 (Australia Sydney)\n159.124.74.212 (Australia Melbourne)\n170.114.134.121 (Hong Kong SAR)\n64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n159.124.168.213 (Canada Toronto)\n159.124.196.25 (Canada Vancouver)\n170.114.194.163 (Japan Tokyo)\n147.124.100.25 (Japan Osaka)\nMeeting ID: 867 2567 0417\nPasscode: 121983\nSIP: 86725670417@zoomcrc.com\nPasscode: 121983

There will be an Artists’ Reception Friday\, February 28th from 6-8 pm. To gain access to the exhibition\, please stop by the Carriage House Visitor Center upon arrival for free admission.\nAbout the Artists:\nBJ Grimmer:\nBJ Grimmer is a long-time artist and former art educator. She\nhas been painting and drawing all her life and received her bachelor’s degree in art education from Iowa State University.\nSince moving to Wilmington in 2019\, BJ has been represented at the Citrine Gallery and has had multiple solo shows including at the Burgwin-Wright House & Gardens and at the Bellamy Mansion Museum previously.\nRicardo Perez:\nRicardo spent 42 years as a National Park Service Ranger where his love of storytelling\, nature\, and historic foodways eventually led him to the world of art and North Carolina in his retirement. He serves as the president of the Art League of Leland and has been a featured artist in Cameron Art Museum’s Art of the State as well as exhibiting his landscapes\, portraits\, and still life originals in several solo shows.\nMany of his works feature common food items\, and he tells stories through those images of the edible. To Ricardo\, a croissant is not just a croissant but a teaching tool for history. “People think the croissant is a French pastry. I think the French elevated it to the form we know now\, but the croissant originated in Austria\, as a way of celebrating the Austrian army’s victory over the Turks in 1683. Food origins are a wonderful way to explore history.”\nFor more information\, please contact Leslie at lmorton@bellamymansion.org or by calling (910)-251-3700 x305.\nhttps://www.bellamymansion.org/exhibits.html
